Topic: Beatle song
Beatle songThe following questions are taken from the “Points for Discussion” found at the end of chapters 3, 4, and 5, respectively, in What Goes On:
• Choose a Beatle song recorded before 1964 through which you can discuss ways in which the Beatles brought new rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, formal, and timbral ideas into rock music.
• What are some of the Beatles’ new musical directions in 1964?
• How did the Beatles both repeat themselves and break new ground in 1965? Using these three questions as your guide, write an essay in which you discuss the band’s growing maturity as musicians and public figures in the period from late 1962 through the summer of 1965.
Because your essay should draw only on the material presents in lectures, the assigned readings, and the discussion in your discussion sections, there is no need to cite your sources. Note:
You should not make use of other sources (books, articles, online material)! Obviously, your essay will include need to some discussion of a handful of songs, but you should also make an attempt to relate the Beatles’ musical activity to some of the leading social issues of the time as discussiqued in lectures and the textbook.SHOW LESS
