How Alderfer’s ERG Theory satisfied the criticisms of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Motivation refers to psychological forces which control the direction of an individual’s behaviour, their level of efforts, and their level of persistence while facing difficulties. Various theories of motivation exist. However, one of the most cited is the hierarchy of needs theory of motivation which holds that needs in the lower level must be satisfied before seeking needs in the next level (Ivancevich et al., 2007). This theory has received criticism from various researchers. The criticisms led to development of ERG theory. Alderfer’s ERG theory satisfies criticisms of Maslow’s theory in different ways. It holds that the real world operates in a flexible manner opposed to rigid hierarchy, individuals are motivated differently, and also includes the principle of frustration-regression.
