Shared governance is one of the most effective ways of decision making. It empowers everyone to participate in making decisions through partnership. The approach is effective in enhancing productivity. Among the characteristics of shared governance include consensus decisions, a partnership among members, and input from all stakeholders. During the committee meeting, these characteristics were identifiable indicting that shared governance was used in the process of arriving at decisions.

The function of the committee was making decisions in the best interest of the organization. The committee members made decisions as a collective group. All those in attendance had a role to play during the meeting. The chairperson was responsible for coordinating all activities during the meeting. The chairperson ensured that all members were participating in the meeting, relevant matters were being discussed, and that decisions were made effectively (IOSH, 2019). The vice-chair served the role of helping the chair in coordinating meeting activities. During the meeting, the vice-chair helped the chair in outlining the purpose of the meeting. He also reminded members of the reason for the meeting.

The secretary was responsible for communicating and documenting committee activities. The secretary served as the key administration officer in the committee. She also maintained al records and distributed minutes. The treasurer played the role of the financial supervisor. The treasurer played a major role in planning the future of the organization in terms of finances. Program coordinator played the role of arranging speakers and visual aids for the meeting (IOSH, 2019). Lastly, general committee members played the role of providing help and support for completion of tasks at hand. These members ensured that the aims and objectives of the meeting were achieved. Most importantly, they made sure that all the taken decisions were in the best interest of the organization.

Throughout the meeting, all members were given time to give their opinion on every agenda. Through the chair, every attendee gave their opinions. Before making any decision, a vote was taken and the majority won. In most of the agendas, all the members seemed to be on the same page when making the final decision. Through formal communication, everyone participated in discussing options leading to consensus decisions. Before settling on a decision, the chair ensured that every attendee is satisfied. Mutual trust, respect, and collaboration were identifiable among the members throughout the meeting.

Based on the interactions among members throughout the meeting, a shared governance approach was used in arriving at decisions. According to Al-Faouri et al., (2014), a shared governance approach involves sharing control, power, and decision making amongst members. It involves giving everyone the right to control their practice by engaging them in budgeting, making schedules, and in making all relevant decisions in an organization. Shared governance is important because, in addition to creating a partnership, it creates ownership, and facilitates accountability essential for effectiveness in decision making.

According to Sattarzadeh-Pashabeig et al., (2018), mutual trust and respect for everyone are key characteristics in shared governance. An environment that fosters shared governance has members working in partnership. Such an environment involves all its members in working together towards the achievement of set objectives. In such an environment members trust and rely on each other. Additionally, respect is common in such environments. Everyone is treated with respect and equally (Sattarzadeh-Pashabeig et al., 2018). In conclusion, it is clear that the committee used shared governance in the process of arriving at decisions. This is considering that characteristics of shared governance such as partnership among members, input from all members, and striving for consensus decisions were identifiable throughout the meeting.
