Written Paper Assignment Details
Type of journal article
i) The paper you choose to present in your report must be an original research paper in a research journal, such as Nature Biomedical Engineering, Journal of the American Chemical Society, etc. Don’t know how to identify BME journals? Google: “scimago biomedical engineering” for a ranking of “impact.” Don’t choose a “Review” paper. Topics could include, but are not limited to, nanotechnology, sensors, synthetic biology, protein engineering, chemically modified biopolymers, etc.
ii) The paper must have been published in the last two years (first published on or after November 1, 2018). You could pick a journal and start searching their Table of Contents backwards up to November 2018. Find something that sounds interesting to you.
iii) The paper must have a clear molecular component related to at least one chapter in your Chem 210 textbook. For example, the paper may concern a protein (Chapter 18) of biomedical interest, but there must be some molecular angle: like the chemical nature of one of the protein’s amino acids, the features of a particular alpha helix, etc.
iv) The article must not have been previously studied by you for another course. The probability that two students will choose the same paper is small, approximately the same as two students both receiving grades of F.
Format of your assignment.
Your report will consist of a single PDF document.
Page 1 will be the actual title page, or Page 1, of the article. It must include the abstract, title, list of authors, publication date and the start of the article’s text, usually the introduction. If one of these items is missing, include it somewhere even if you have to add a pdf page. I will look up the original article if I need to.
Page 2 This will be your one page written summary, in your original words, of the problem studied and the progress being reported. I will check for plagiarism. If I find it, you will receive a zero. You read, you understand, you paraphrase and present on page 2 your own understanding of the work. Near the top of the page, state which textbook chapter is related to your article and, briefly, how.
Page 3. This will be an original graphic presentation of what the article is reporting. I hope you use a graphics software—some are licensed by the university—to construct your graphic. Adobe Illustrator is one example. Chemical structures can be drawn using ChemDraw (or by hand). If you have a good reason why you can’t use a graphics software for your graphic, then you may draw it freehand and photograph it but if it doesn’t look orderly you may lose points. The graphic can contain some text, labels, etc but not large amounts of text. It should stand alone to give the reader the essence of what the paper is about. It can consist of a series of smaller graphics, if that helps the communication. You are encouraged to be creative, and to communicate the research visually however you can imagine. You may use parts of the paper’s actual figures, but these should be no more than a supporting part of your graphic.
Margins etc. Avoid extremes. Your Page 2 should have 1 inch (or greater) margins. Use Times New Roman font, or similar, size 11 or larger (this is size 11). Spacing: 1, 1.5 or double. Whatever you need to succinctly communicate the research in one page. You don’t even have to fill the page, just convey the research.
File title for your graphic (you will receive a Dropbox invitation to upload):
