Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis

Prompt: Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” sheds light on the topics of isolation, sacrifice, neglect, dedication, individualism, and inner change. Kafka’s shocking stylistic device—portraying the protagonist as a bug—exhibits Gregor’s being crushed by authority and monotony. These themes allude to the overarching theme of the semester: social norms. The actions that lead to Gregor’s downfall are not ordinary. His struggles are many, and his situation sad, but perhaps we can draw inspiration from them.
