This week’s domain of knowledge: STRESS, COPING, ADJUSTMENT, AND HEALTH.
Textbook used:Larsen, R. J., Buss, D. M., Wismeijer, A., & Song, J. (2018). Personality psychology: Domains of knowledge about human nature.
A blog is a short essay that introduces and defines a term, concept, or theory from the book, and then provides a colorful illustration, example, or metaphor to help bring it to life. Ideally, the illustration or example is something from your own life or experiences. In this way, the blog connects an idea from the textbook with evidence of it from your own life.
A blog is short: 350-500 words. But it is a finely crafted piece of writing. You have to accomplish your writing mission as efficiently and effectively as you can.
• Writing mission: To teach other students about a concept related to personality psychology.
• Intended audience: High school or college students interested in psychology, but who have not had
this class.
• Writing style: Personal but formal. The personal part is that you should draw upon your own life
experiences, so using “I” and “me” is appropriate. Your example or illustration should be vivid, believable, memorable, and interesting. The formal part is that you have to use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
The key thing about a blog is that it has to be “tasty.” Imagine eating a tasty snack, like chips or M&M’s. These food items are cleverly designed to make you want to keep eating them. A blog has to be like that. It has to be visually appealing, informative, interesting, easy-to-read. All of this adds up to “tasty.”
• Title: Should be catchy and inviting to draw in the reader.
• Paragraphs: Blogs can have paragraphs as short as 1-2 sentences and rarely longer than 4 sentences.
You have to use paragraph structures and have a blank line between paragraphs.
• Bolded section headings. Your blog should have three bolded section headings on their own lines.
These headings should introduce the topic, illustration, and closing (see below for the four sectionsof blogs). Do not use the words “topic, illustration, or closing,” rather, use a short phrase or catchy title for each section.
• Bullets and numbered lists: Totally acceptable. Use these kinds of list wherever appropriate.
• Images and pictures: Yes. You should find at least one, but preferably 2-3 images that complement
what you are writing about. It’s fine to use free photos and images that you can find on-line.
• Links to other pages: Yes. A blog should link to 1-3 other places on the web where the reader can go to find factual information related to what you are talking about.
Your blog should follow this structure:
• Opening: an interest-generating or attention-grabbing opening
• Topic: introduce and define the topic you will address
• Illustration: Your own personal example that clarifies and illustrates the topic that you are presenting
• Closing: brief statement that ties together the topic and invites the reader to think about it further.
