Run DMC, LL Cool J and others introduced a style that combined name-brand athletic wear and significant jewelry. Female vocalists also wielded great fashion influence. Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Grace Jones, and Gloria Estefan are among the many singers who inspired their fans.
Both the rap aesthetic and the style of female vocalists remains influential, but have morphed over time. Some fashion brands were subverted and incorporated into hip hop style. A Brooklyn collective known as the Lo-Lifes collected Polo Ralph Lauren, as detailed in this detailed article by Complex.
