PAPER #2: Reflection on Racism

The purpose of this assignment is:

  • To illustrate a construct of your awareness regarding your racist paradigm.
  • To examine ways that race affect humans’ health and well-being.
    Skills: Learning how to become uncomfortable with feeling uncomfortable.
    Knowledge: Self-awareness.
  1. Choose one of the following video clips:

    d. Alternatively, you may choose another video clip, a book, a poem, etc. that deals with the
    topic of racism.
    • Email your instructor your alternative choice for a pre-approval by the instructor
    who is marking your paper.
    • The remainder of the paper follows all of the guidelines noted for paper #2.
  2. Discussion points to be addressed in the paper include:
    i. DESCRIBE how you feel an element (s) of racism is evident or not evident in the video clip?
    ii. DISCUSS how you feel the role of racism plays in the health and well-being of humans.
    iii. DESCRIBE how you see racism affecting your role as a nursing student and future professional nurse.
  3. For this paper, you will use the two definitions below regarding racism and societal racism.
    Definitions:
    i. Racism: prejudice, discrimination, hatred directed against someone of a different race based on the belief
    that one’s own race is superior.
    ii. Societal racism is a term that refers to racist attitudes within society. It is also called structural racism.
    According to Carl E. James, society is structured to exclude substantial numbers people from minority
    backgrounds from taking part in social institutions.
  4. For this paper, you will:
    i. FORMAT the paper according to APA 7th edition
    ii. Include a minimum of the following headings in your paper:
    o A title page
    o Appropriate headings
    ▪ The title of the paper (i.e., Self-Reflection: Racism). A brief introductory
    paragraph follows.
  • As per APA, the paragraph under the title of your paper is the introduction
  • No abstract is required for this paper
    ▪ Elements of Racism
    ▪ Role Racism Plays in Health and Well-Being
    ▪ Racism Impacting my Role
    ▪ Conclusion
    ▪ References: include a minimum of three.

    iii. The maximum length of the paper is six pages. The six pages does not include the title
    page and the reference page(s).
    iv. The paper will be submitted in a pdf format. No other files are accepted.

  1. Alternatively, instead of writing a paper, you can CREATE a picture, skit, video, etc. and present
    your creation to the class. The class presentation will address the three discussion points noted above.
    Anyone interested in pursuing the alternative aspect of this assignment should connect with his or her
    theory instructors via email on or before Monday, October 5th to discuss your plans, obtain approval for
    your presentation format, and obtain an approved date in which you will present your assignment to the
    class.
    • The presentation is 15 minutes, with 5 to 10 minutes for a question and answer period.
