Artificial Intelligence

The research essay will be a 8-10 page argumentative paper( must have thesis and provided supporting arguments and evidence). It will require 5 outside sources and AT LEAST 1 of the 5 sources must be a print source. Works cited page must be in MLA format as well. Use quotes from sources and parenthetical citation should be used as well. So create a thesis revolving around artificial intelligence and expand on the topic.

Benefits and Risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be defined as the concept and development of computer systems that are capable of performing tasks that usually entail human intelligence like speech acknowledgment, decision-making, translation and visual perception (Dietterich & Horvitz; Marcus). Artificial intelligence is growing rapidly with today’s level of technology. AI used today is known as the weak AI that can only perform simple and narrow tasks but the long term goal for researchers is to create general AI. Weak AI can outperform humans at specific tasks given to them but general AI has the ability to outperform humans at almost all cognitive tasks. This means that AI has the capability of becoming more intelligent than humans but does this pose a risk to humanity? Some experts have expressed their concerns over growing AI which they see as a danger to humanity while others think there is nothing to worry about.

AI becomes quite hard to predict it behavior especially because it depends on a set of instructions that have been provided to it. Scientists disagree on how long it will take for the AI to fully develop but they all agree it will in some decades to come. With this many have raised concerns on the safety of the AI because of their ability to outdo humans. This paper will look into the benefits and the risks that are posed by AI to the community and if people should be worried about this technology. The risks posed by AI systems are real and before creating of any super intelligent machine it is vital that the scientists think about the risks (Marcus). The super intelligent machines may not be evil, but their level of competence is high which means that to control them their goals must align with the users which might not be the case sometimes (Tegmark).
