Competencies:3064.1.2: Teams and Team Dynamics – The graduate describes the role of teams in organizational effectiveness and the influence of individual behavior on team dynamics.3064.1.3: Leadership – The graduate applies leadership theories and methods to support desired behaviors.
Introduction:
Teams play an important part in the success of an organization, and a team’s leader can help support behaviors that will promote effectiveness within the team, and ultimately, the organization.
In this task, you will apply behavioral theory as you explore the process of leading a team, promoting effective behavior, and resolving conflict.
Scenario:
Endothon is one of the world’s top space exploration agencies. Recently, a lengthy bidding process took place to obtain one of Endothon’s highly esteemed projects. Techfite, an innovative design company, was awarded the bid. Techfite has been in a major financial slump over the last two years, and this project provides a chance for Techfite to finally turn things around. Other companies would be eager to partner with Endothon if the project falls through, so Techfite has to proceed carefully. In addition, if this project turns out to be successful, it will help raise Techfite’s reputation and pave the path for a long-lasting partnership with Endothon.
The project involves creating a new outer coating that will help rockets travel at a higher velocity. The coating will have an advanced thermal protection system to minimize the heat of air friction during travel time. This coating, if developed successfully, will be cutting-edge for space exploration and will allow rockets to travel to new frontiers.
You have been assigned the prestigious role of project leader. The project must meet several goals: budget constraints, innovative design, and safety. It is your job to effectively lead the team in completing this project. The attached “Team Profiles” document provides details about each of the members of your team.
Requirements:
Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. Use the Turnitin Originality Report available in Taskstream as a guide for this measure of originality.
The rubric provides detailed criteria for evaluating your submission. It is expected that you use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.
For this task, the suggested length is 4 pages.
A. Describe and justify the leadership approach you will take in managing the Techfite project team, using one of the following leadership theories:
? trait theory
? task-oriented leadership
? relationship oriented leadership
? Fiedler’s contingency model
? transformational leadership

B. Describe two strategies that will help the Techfite project team work effectively. Include a justification in your description for why each strategy will be effective.

Note: Consider, for example, using team-building strategies and keys to effective teams to shape your strategies.

The project has now been underway for two months. Recently, Laura complained to you that she would like to quit the project group. Laura feels that her voice is not being heard and that Bill and Mark have privately teamed up to control the project. Bill is pushing hard for the team to try a new chemical compound, and while Mark supports this, John and Laura are unwilling to try the new compound. The group rarely meets as a whole, and project deadlines seem stalled.
C. Analyze this conflict by doing the following:
1. Describe the type of conflict this situation represents.
2. Discuss how you would resolve this conflict.
3. Discuss how you would use this conflict as an opportunity for team building.
