After the 2001 terrorist attack in the US, observers called for better intelligence in the prevention of similar occurrences on the homeland. It was identified that intelligence was not being fully exploited to safeguard and secure the nation. In response, the department of homeland security was formed. Homeland security works in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that the US is free from terrorism and crime. While the agencies share similarities in terms of intelligence methods, duties, and responsibilities, they have some differences. This paper discusses the similarities and differences of the agencies in terms of intelligence methods, duties, and responsibilities. While the agencies work to ensure that the nation is secure, they use different approaches to promote homeland security.

Similarities

The US military, local, state, and federal law enforcement, as well as Homeland security have their own duties and responsibilities to play. They however share some similarities in intelligence methods, duties, and responsibilities. In the comparison section, the similarities on a shared mission, similar intelligence process, use of community policing, during of securing the homeland, and the preparation of citizens for disasters have been discussed. However, the approach taken by agencies vary (Homeland Security, 2005). For instance, the intensity of the intelligence process may be is stronger at the federal level than at the local level though they all use a similar process.
