For this course students will read Sudhir Venkateshs Gang Leader for a Day and develop a thematic paper. This thematic paper will draw on the larger concepts and themes of the course and tie them back into the authors (Vanketesh) experiences and findings with the Chicago based inner-city groups and workings that he has been studying for over ten years. A good paper will have an
introduction that guides the reader through the paper. Following the introduction, subtopics or themes are a good
way to organize the paper and connect the course materials with Vanketesh’s research. Next, provide a
conclusion to the paper. In this section, students should consider what they now know and have learned in this
course and provide some evidence on potential possibilities/ideas for repairing the key relationships between our
criminal justice system and communities. Finally, students will provide a bibliography of any works that are
cited throughout the paper.
In total, the thematic paper should be between 7 to 10 pages in length and is worth 75 points or 25 percent of
your final grade. The completion of this thematic paper is a cumulative way for students to demonstrate their
knowledge gained throughout the course.
