Utilizing the theoretical and critical approach developed in Barrett’s book, Why is that Art?, choose one of your favorite artists (or one of your favorite works of art) and describe the nature of the work or the nature of the artist’s body of work and some of the main ways critics have viewed the work or the artist.
Add to this a few of the ways the artist describes his or her own work or the specific work you are discussing (if you can find such an account), and then discuss what you think personally of the work or the artist and why. As you describe the work or artist you have chosen, be sure to discuss the work’s or artist’s relation to whichever theory or theories seem most appropriate: realism (or some variation of realism), expressionism (and/or cognitivism), formalism (and or minimalism), or some relevant dimension of post-modernism.
Also, if the work or artist is associated with a particular art movement or period or style, you should draw that into your discussion so as to situate the work or the artist in the proper art historical and/or cultural context. The theoretical and descriptive parameters you utilize will be determined essentially by the specific work or artist you choose. Please be sure to include a clear thesis paragraph at the beginning of your essay and a clear concludiiqung paragraph at the end.
