Fermentative Patterns of Gram-Negative Bacteria Assignment
Instructions – 1-4 page report (excluding references) on the unknown bacterium next to your
student ID on the next page. You can do the report on either the genus of your species or more
specifically on the exact species, this is your choice.
Format: can be double-spaced and bullet points
• Background of your unknown that must be included:
o Information on gram stain result, cell shape and arrangement.
o Information on the different places it can be found (microbiota, environmental,
plant symbioses, water systems).
o Describe its pathogenicity:
▪ Does this bacterium typically infect humans?
▪ What type of disease can arise after infection?
o Include the biochemical test results you would have found after the lab exercise.
Look also at the table on page 122 of the lab manual for more information.
▪ Go through every single one of the biochemical tests in the
“Fermentative Patterns” section of the lab manual and describe the result
for your species for each of them!
▪ Is your bacterium positive/negative for lactose/glucose fermentation,
sulfur reduction, indole production, etc.? How does that look like in this
test? (For example: “The phenol-red broth would be yellow because the
species ferments glucose to an acid and the Durham tube would contain a
bubble because the species can do mixed acid fermentation which
produces CO2, a gas. This means it is positive for glucose fermentation
and gas production.”)
▪ This portion may not be apparent until you do background research on
your organism and discover how it acts! Look at the lab manual first. If
you cannot find the information there – do an internet search!
o Include any other relevant background information found.
Write down anything exciting regarding your microbe that you find online!
Cite the sources and references you used to find any outside information on the last page of
the report.
